Crown thinning is a technique used to remove a portion of smaller branches to produce a uniformed density of foliage and an evenly spaced branch structure. Removing heavily congested shoots within a tree allows more light through which can be a major benefit to the surrounding environment and ground health. Crown thinning reduces the weight of each limb and also allows for lowered wind resistance making the tree safer in strong or adverse weather. Dead wooding is a similar technique to crown thinning and often the two pruning techniques are carried out together. Crown thinning doesn’t alter the overall shape and size of the tree.
